Crime Stats & Info

We found a valuable resource that allows you to find very targeted crime statistics reported by local law enforcement agencies. The US DOJ has a variety of different resoucres to learn about crime in America. Below is a sampling of facts we compiled, and personal safety strategies you can use to stay safe.

FACTS
The US Department of Justice reports:
One violent crime every 22 seconds
One robbery every 80 seconds
One aggravated assault every 35 seconds
One forcible rape every 6 minutes

A large percentage of criminals have not been apprehended:
Of all murder cases, 31% remain unsolved
51% of all rapists remain at large
Of all aggravated assault cases, 41% remain unsolved
In 71% of all robbery cases, the perpetrators remain at large

STRATEGIES
Step 1: Realize you could be attacked, at any time
Be aware of your environment and the people around you
Tell others where you are going
Change your routines
If something does not feel right, leave the area

Step 2: Avoid potentially compromising situations
Avoid walking alone—always be in eye or ear shot of others
Stay in well lighted, busy areas
Walk away from parked cars, alleys, bushes, and entry ways
Avoid vacant or deserted areas
Keep distant from people asking directions

Step 3: Be composed and ready
Ignore verbal harassment—move on quickly
Walk upright, and confidently—criminals prey on fear
Have defense spray in hand and ready to use
Have cell phone handy
If you do sense attack, yell “NO!”. This gets their attention and tells them to back off, you are not an easy target, and you'll put up a fight
If the attack persists and you want to draw attention yell “FIRE!” instead of “HELP!”

All of these tactics make you high risk, and less vulnerable to attack. A critical part to your defense is a personal defense tool like pepper spray, stun guns, or kubotan—non-lethal, yet effective attacker deterrents. Being aware and having the protection in your hands makes you a much less appealing target for attack.

Safety Workshops
If you live in the greater Los Angeles area, we offer Safety Workshops where we give a dynamic presentation to groups of 30 or more about defense tactics and offer practical solutions to staying safe. You'll walk away wiser, and with information that could save your life.  Contact us to learn more.
