Comparing pepper spray:
It is important to understand what you are buying when you purchase pepper spray.  Many companies produce different grades and quality of pepper spray. You don't measure the strength of a pepper spray based on percentages of OC alone. This is a common misconception. There are sprays ranging from 2% to 20% OC. You might think the 20% must be better, but that's not necessarily the case. They are simply using a greater concentration of a weaker formula to make up for the overall quality of product.

Most sprays will eventually work, but if you want the maximum in pepper spray protection, a premium spray will be the best choice for you. Premium sprays work faster, more intensely, consistently, and are more generally more effective than standard grade pepper spray.

A critical factor determining the grade of pepper spray is the Scoville Heat Units rating, or SHUs. SHUs measure the base heat of the pepper spray. Clearly 5.3MM (Premium Grade) is hotter than the 2MM (Standard Grade) solution.

There are a variety of other things you need to consider when purchasing pepper spray, like how the spray is made, the quality of ingredients, etc. Just don't let the numbers fool you.
